About Cynthia Edstrom

I am excited to be sharing my thoughts, wonderings, curiosity, and concerns through my writing here. As you will discover if you read my work, I have many interests and passions. I need to keep learning new things; otherwise my curious mind would drive me crazy. Seriously, I just love to learn about things, to read, to research, to listen and explore ideas and real world actions.

I live in northwest Montana on some lovely, rural acreage with my husband Steve, our three dogs, two cats, sheep, chickens, llama, alpacas, a huarizo, many plants and lots of wildlife. I am truly blessed to live in such a lovely, rural spot. For me, living in the country is required. I have something I’ve named ‘urban aversion syndrome’(a diagnosis I made up) which means I truly cannot stand to live in a town or city. I loose my mental and physical health. I can’t explain it, but it’s real.

In my earlier years, I was a pediatrician practicing in West Virginia and Montana. In the late ‘90s I trained as a neonatologist and practiced as a neonatologist (baby intensive care) in Boise, Idaho and then Kalispell, Montana near where I now live. I retired from medicine in 2009. Since then my time and energy were occupied with getting my neurodivergent children grown and launched, caring for my aging parents who have no passed on, while learning organic farming, permaculture, soil biology, and many other things about growing food and restoring land.

I have also become interested in all things fiber and textiles, learning hand spinning, weaving, sewing, and continuing the knitting I learned as a child. I’m a dabbler and not particularly good at any of these things, but I enjoy them and I enjoy the tactile and kinesthetic experience. It’s ground for me and my inquisitive mind.

In my writing, I share what I’m exploring and learning about at the moment. Often these are about my journey to recover from diet culture and body dysmorphia, my explorations into my ancestry and how our history influences our present, often in seemingly invisible ways. I’ll also share what’s going on on our land, in my community, and try to find ways in which we are all connected in our common humanity and in the miracle that is life on this Earth.
